What is Cold Process Soap?

Cold process soap is a time-honoured method of soap-making where oils and fats are combined with a lye solution to create soap through a chemical reaction called saponification.  Unlike hot process soap, which is cooked, cold process soap is made at room temperature, allowing the ingredients to retain their beneficial properties.

Our Ingredients

At Muddy Bar, we use a blend of premium oils and butters to ensure our soap is nourishing and effective:

• Coconut Oil: Rich in lauric acid, coconut oil provides a robust lather and has excellent cleansing properties. Its high concentration of fatty acids helps to clean and moisturise the skin, making it a staple in many soap formulations.
• Fair Trade Shea Butter: Known for its high content of oleic acid and stearic acid, shea butter is deeply moisturising and helps to restore the skin’s natural barrier. It also contains vitamins A and E, which contribute to skin repair and hydration.
• Cocoa Butter: Cocoa butter is packed with oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid, which help to create a creamy texture and lock in moisture. Its emollient properties make it ideal for softening and smoothing the skin.
• Additive-Free Canola Oil: This oil is rich in oleic acid and linoleic acid, which help to condition and nourish the skin. It’s a gentle, neutral oil that enhances the soap’s moisturising qualities without adding any unnecessary additives.
• Olive Oil: Olive oil is renowned for its high levels of oleic acid and antioxidants, which provide a mild, conditioning effect. It helps to maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.
• Castor Oil: Known for its high ricinoleic acid content, castor oil enhances the lather and adds a touch of luxury to the soap. It also helps to moisturise and soften the skin, making it a valuable ingredient in our formulation.

Each bar is enriched with New Zealand volcanic clay, which is known for its detoxifying and mineral-rich properties. We also use high-quality IFRA (International Fragrance Association) fragrances and essential oils to create delightful scents that are both safe and effective.

The Curing Process

Our specially developed formula is carefully cured for a minimum of four weeks. This essential step allows the soap to fully harden and develop its optimal qualities, resulting in a bar that is long-lasting and gentle on the skin. Curing also ensures that any excess water evaporates, leaving behind a firm and high-quality soap.

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite vs. Natural Mica

In our quest for the highest quality, we use synthetic fluorphlogopite instead of natural mica. While natural mica has been a popular choice for adding shimmer and color to soap, synthetic fluorphlogopite offers several advantages:

• Purity: Synthetic fluorphlogopite is manufactured to be free from impurities and contaminants, providing a consistent, high-quality product.
• Ethical Considerations: The production of synthetic fluorphlogopite avoids the environmental and ethical issues associated with mining natural mica.
• Performance: It provides a smooth, uniform appearance and exceptional colour stability, enhancing the visual appeal of our soaps.
